Egypt Shares Climate Adaptation Expertise at World Urban Forum

Within the framework of the 12th session of the World Urban Forum in Cairo, held under the theme "Everything Starts Locally - Working Together for Sustainable Cities and Communities," Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Executive Director of #eccadp Project, participated in a joint session between Egypt and Colombia titled "Resilient Communities and Climate Change Adaptation - A Water-Focused Approach."

The session addressed the common challenges faced by both countries as a result of climate change and showcased Egypt's pioneering experience in protecting the Nile Delta through the project to enhance adaptation to climate change. This project, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and executed by the Egyptian General Authority for Coastal Protection, with support from the United Nations Development Programme and funding from the Green Climate Fund, serves as a model for the region.

Dr. Ali highlighted the efforts exerted over more than seven years to achieve balanced social, environmental, and economic dimensions in coastal communities, while providing a safe and sustainable investment climate and new job opportunities. He emphasized that the adaptation project is one of the largest projects in Africa in the field of climate change adaptation and addressing sea-level rise. It also represents a global pioneering model in using low-cost, environmentally friendly natural materials in shore protection works, with extensive community participation, especially women, which enhances the project's sustainability. Dr. Ali pointed out that the protection methods used are simple and innovative, developed in cooperation with the local community, making them environmentally friendly and effective in addressing climate change challenges.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Khalaf, President of the New Damietta City Development Authority, presented a unique experience in the field of nature restoration and biodiversity, through a model of protections in New Damietta City with the possibility of adding various services along a 550-meter length, taking into account the social and cultural dimensions of the area. He affirmed that this model will be generalized at the republic's level.
