Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Inspects Climate Adaptation Enhancement Project

In the framework of confronting climate change and protecting the Nile River Delta from flooding by seawater, H.E. Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, inspected the protection works of the Climate Adaptation Enhancement Project in the Nile Delta and the North Coast in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. He was accompanied during the visit by Major General Jamal Nour El-Din, Governor of Kafr El-Sheikh, Mr. Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Egypt, Mr. Professor Dr. Essam Khalifa, Head of the Egyptian Coast Protection Authority, Mr. Dr. Mohamed Bayoumi, Representative of the United Nations Development Fund, and Mr. Dr. Mohamed Ahmed, Executive Director of the project. Professor Dr. Hani Suwailem stated that this project is one of the leading projects in the world in the field of coastal protection, as many senior officials from many countries and international organizations are keen to visit this project as a leading model in the use of low-cost and environmentally friendly materials as an alternative to concrete blocks commonly used in coastal protection works, with the participation of the local community in preparing the reed fences used as sand barriers as part of the protection system, which reflects the sustainability of this leading project. His Excellency also inspected another dimension of the protection works in the governorate, which is the social dimension, through the small projects that were presented to the residents of the areas most affected by climate change, which were in cooperation with the Desert Research Center, and included agricultural greenhouses, solar dryers, salt agriculture, Azolla agriculture, and fish hatcheries.
