Empowering Coastal Communities in Kafr El-Sheikh: New Projects to Enhance Resilience Against Climate Challenges
In a strategic move to bolster the resilience of coastal areas against climate challenges, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate has announced the commencement of the second phase of local community development projects. These initiatives are part of the "Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the Nile Delta" project, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This announcement came during an expanded meeting chaired by Major General Mohamed Shawky Badr, the Governor’s Secretary-General, acting on the directives of Engineer Ibrahim Makki, Governor of Kafr El-Sheikh. The meeting focused on discussing executive plans and proposed projects for the upcoming phase, in alignment with Egypt Vision 2030 and national efforts to protect the Delta’s coastlines.
Timelines and Ambitious Targets
The meeting recommended the adoption of a precise timeline for the second phase, which includes:
Launch of Field Implementation: Commencing core projects within the next few months.
Technical Support and Training: Enhancing qualification mechanisms for beneficiaries among coastal residents to ensure maximum project impact.
Sustainability and Evaluation: Establishing periodic plans to assess social and economic impacts, ensuring the success and long-term continuity of projects serving the local community.
International Partnership and Local Coordination
The meeting featured high-level attendance from environmental and coastal management experts, including Dr. Mohamed Bayoumi (Assistant Resident Representative of the UNDP), Dr. Mohamed Ahmed (Project Executive Director), and Dr. Taher Othman (Integrated Coastal Zone Management Official). They were joined by the heads of Baltim and Borg Al-Burullus cities, along with leaders from Urban Planning, Environment, and the National Emergency Network in the governorate.
A Holistic Vision for Adaptation
Participants emphasized that these projects do not only target protection against sea-level rise but also extend to the comprehensive development of local communities. This is achieved by maximizing cooperation with partner entities and providing innovative, nature-based solutions to enhance the ability of Kafr El-Sheikh’s residents to cope with rapid climate changes.
