Damietta Governorate at the Heart of the Event: Its University Leads Awareness Efforts on the Risks of Climate Change
Damietta University's Faculty of Science Hosts an Important Seminar on Adapting to Climate Change and Efforts to Protect the Delta and the Northern Coast
Within the framework of the ongoing awareness week on the concept of climate change and the efforts made to confront its effects, the Faculty of Science at Damietta University hosted an important awareness seminar entitled "A Message from Planet Earth," attended by a distinguished group of professors and students. The faculty welcomed the project team "Enhancing Adaptation to Climate Change in the Nile Delta and the Northern Coast" to present a comprehensive overview of this vital issue. The seminar was honored by the presence of Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Executive Director; Mr. Hassan Gabrallah El-Tayeb, Media Coordinator; Engineer Aliaa Mohamed Ahmed Hassan, representative of the Egyptian Public Authority for Shore Protection; and Engineer Mohamed Mohamed Kamal El-Daly, Director of the Governorate's Environmental Department and the project's Climate Ambassador.
The seminar's activities commenced with a valuable speech by Professor Dr. Hamdan Rabie, President of Damietta University, who emphasized the utmost importance of linking theoretical scientific research with practical application, stressing the need for research efforts to yield tangible results that serve society in various fields. His Excellency also pointed out the pivotal role that awareness seminars play in enhancing students' awareness of the national efforts made to confront the challenges posed by climate change.
The project team presented a detailed presentation addressing the concept of climate change and the dimensions of its ambitious project to enhance adaptation to these changes. The team explained how the project relies on the use of shore protection technologies inspired by nature itself. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan was also reviewed, which is a strategic plan aimed at providing comprehensive future visions on potential inundation risks and their impact on groundwater conditions along the 1200-kilometer Egyptian Mediterranean coast until the year 2100.
The project team affirmed that this ambitious plan provides decision-makers with a clear vision of the scale of potential risks and how to best deal with them. In addition, it offers valuable tools to help decision-makers adopt sustainable development strategies in coastal areas, taking into account expected long-term climate risks and working to manage them effectively.
This seminar comes within the framework of the community awareness plan launched by the "Enhancing Adaptation to Climate Change in the Nile Delta and the Coast" project in cooperation with Damietta Governorate and relevant authorities to raise awareness about the importance of the climate change issue and the necessity of concerted efforts to confront its challenges and protect the future of future generations.
