A pioneering step to enhance the resilience of Egyptian coasts: ensuring a smooth and sustainable mechanism for the transfer and collection of data for the National Coastal Monitoring System among relevant entities.
Within the framework of the intensive efforts of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan, the second component of the project "Enhancing Adaptation to Climate Change in the Nile Delta and North Coast Regions," and based on the decision of His Excellency Professor Dr./ President of the National Water Research Center No. 225 dated 15/4/2025, the first meeting of the committee tasked with drafting a cooperation and operation protocol for the National Coastal Monitoring System was held.
The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Professor Dr./ Ayman El-Saady, Vice President of the Center for Research Affairs, and attended by His Excellency Dr./ Mohamed Ahmed, Executive Director of the project "Enhancing Adaptation to Climate Change in the North Coast and Nile Delta Regions in Egypt," and His Excellency Professor Dr./ Mohamed Soliman, the Technical Officer of the National Coastal Monitoring System for the project.
Representatives from relevant national bodies and sectors also participated in the meeting, including (the Egyptian General Authority for Shore Protection – the Egyptian General Authority for Surveying – the Egyptian Meteorological Authority of the Ministry of Civil Aviation – the Irrigation Department – the Planning Sector). Also present were Her Excellency Professor Dr./ Nagwa El-Ashmawy, Director of the Geographic Information Systems Unit at the Center, Dr./ Hoda Amer from the Technical Office of the Center's President, and a representative from the Legal Affairs Department of the Center. The meeting also witnessed virtual participation from Engineer/ Amal Gasser, Head of the Central Administration for Water Resources Information Systems in the Planning Sector, and Dr./ Salsabil Mohamed from the Coastal Research Institute.
The meeting discussions focused on the necessary procedures to ensure the sustainable management and effective operation of the National Coastal Monitoring System, in a way that guarantees a smooth mechanism for the exchange and collection of vital data among various concerned entities within the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and its affiliated bodies. This aims to ensure the continuity of the system's operation and the achievement of its objectives after the project period ends.
This step is a nucleus for establishing an early warning system for extreme marine phenomena and comes within the framework of Egypt's efforts to enhance its ability to adapt to climate change and protect its coasts and natural resources for future generations.
