National Capacity Building: Climate Adaptation Project Trains Egyptian Experts on Sea Level Monitoring Station Management
In a proactive step towards enhancing Egypt’s capabilities in confronting climate challenges and protecting its coasts, the project "Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta" organized an intensive online training course on the management and operation of sea level monitoring stations. This training is part of the project's efforts to establish a National Coastal Monitoring System, which is a key component of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management plan.
The training was held from October 20 to 23, 2025, and aimed to qualify specialized personnel to manage 7 modern sea level measurement stations distributed along Egypt's Mediterranean coast. An expert from the leading German company "OTT HydroMet" took on the task of training 8 participants representing a selection of Egyptian research institutions, including the National Water Research Center (NWRC) and its affiliated institutes (Survey Research Institute and Coastal Research Institute), in addition to participants from the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The training program covered aspects of operating and managing the observations for all stations, which use pressure and radar measurement technologies to monitor sea level, in addition to measuring sea surface temperature at the monitoring sites. The training also included how to operate the observation reception software, display the data, and monitor the status of the stations and data receipt at the NWRC’s main server.
This training aims to enable national cadres to monitor the reception of observations in real-time, promptly handle the data transmitted from the stations, evaluate it, and display it effectively. This will contribute to the integrated data analysis with the rest of the marine and coastal monitoring systems, providing a comprehensive and accurate picture of marine and coastal phenomena in the measurement area, serving as a basis for establishing an early warning network for marine phenomena and supporting informed decision-making to protect the Egyptian coasts from the impacts of climate change.
