Kafr El Sheikh Hosts First Awareness Workshop on Egypt's Efforts to Combat Climate Change

Under the patronage of H. E. Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Major General Dr. Alaa Abdel-Maaty, Governor of Kafr El Sheikh, and in a new step to address the impacts of climate change on the Nile Delta coast, the Climate Change Adaptation Project launched its first awareness workshop today at the governorate headquarters for those working in relevant government agencies. This workshop aimed to raise awareness about the state's efforts to deal with these impacts.
The workshop comes within the framework of cooperation and integration among state leaders to raise awareness among various segments of society about climate issues and the state's efforts in this regard, in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and support the economic development of coastal areas.

Major General Mohamed Shawky Badr, Secretary-General of Kafr El Sheikh Governorate, emphasized the state's keen interest and continuous support in addressing climate change, noting the concerted efforts of all concerned agencies to deal with the issue of climate change while preserving the environment and protecting coastal areas.

Engineer Mohamed Hassan Ghattas, Deputy Chairman of the Egyptian General Authority for Coastal Protection, added that the adaptation project aims not only to protect the Nile Delta but also the entire Mediterranean coast through the integrated coastal zone management plan, which works to develop future procedures for decision-makers to deal with expected risks on the Mediterranean coast in the future, ensuring the protection of citizens, infrastructure, and creating a safe and sustainable climate for investment and development.

Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Executive Director of the project, stated that raising awareness among different segments of society about the state's efforts in adapting to climate change is a top priority for the project, so that citizens, executive state agencies, and political leaders are all on the same level of awareness regarding climate change and the state's efforts.

Hassan Gabr Allah, the project's media coordinator, added that the Kafr El Sheikh workshop is part of a large-scale awareness campaign launched by the project last October in the coastal governorates where the project's protection works were carried out, noting that it will continue over the coming months.

The workshop was attended by Engineer Salwa Mohamed Hassan Abdel Fattah, Head of the Central Administration for Implementation and Maintenance at the Egyptian General Authority for Coastal Protection, Engineer Abdel Razak Abdel Nabi, Head of Constructions in the project, Dr. Mohamed El-Genzouri, Director of Environmental Affairs in the governorate, and Engineer Fatima El-Shawdafi, Director General of Urban Planning in Kafr El Sheikh, as well as a number of leaders from Kafr El Sheikh Governorate.

It is worth noting that the Climate Change Adaptation Project has successfully protected 69 km using environmentally friendly and low-cost techniques in the governorates of Kafr El Sheikh, Dakahlia, Beheira, New Damietta, and Port Said, which were implemented in cooperation between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, represented by the Egyptian General Authority for Coastal Protection, and the United Nations Development Programme, with funding from the Green Climate Fund.
