Kafr El Sheikh Governor Emphasizes Pivotal Role of Social Component in Climate Change Adaptation Project
Major General Dr. Alaa Ibrahim Abdel Moaty, Governor of Kafr El Sheikh, welcomed the working team of the Climate Change Adaptation Project in the Nile Delta and North Coast of Egypt. The team was led by Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, the Project's Executive Director, and included Mr. Hassan Gabr Allah, the Project's Media Coordinator, as well as the Project's Climate Ambassadors, Dr. Mohamed El Ganzoury, Director of the Governorate's Environment Department, and Eng. Fatma El Shawadfy, Director General of the Urban Planning Department. The meeting discussed the latest developments related to the various components of the project.
During the meeting, the Governor of Kafr El Sheikh underscored the paramount importance of the project, describing it as one of the leading initiatives in protecting coastal areas from the risks of rising sea levels. He highlighted its reliance on natural, sustainable, and low-cost protection techniques.
His Excellency also stressed the critical importance of the social component in achieving social and economic stability for citizens. He clarified that this component aims to support small-scale projects for citizens and small farmers within the governorate, empowering them to cope with the impacts of climate change and improve their living standards.
The Governor expressed the Kafr El Sheikh Governorate's full readiness to provide all possible support for launching the new phase of the Project's social component in Kafr El Sheikh. This includes a focus on targeting the largest possible segment of residents in various villages across the governorate to achieve comprehensive community development and provide sustainable job opportunities. This will be done in close cooperation with the Project management and active civil society organizations, such as the Food Bank and Misr El-Kheir Association.
It's worth noting that the Ministry of Water Resources, in collaboration with the Kafr El Sheikh Governorate and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched the first phase of the social component in Kafr El Sheikh Governorate during 2023 and 2024. During this phase, support was provided for small-scale projects in diverse fields such as agricultural greenhouses, honeybee farms, azolla feed production, and vegetable drying projects.
It's also important to mention that the project has successfully protected 69 kilometers of the Nile Delta from the risk of seawater inundation. This project is being implemented in collaboration between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with implementation by the Egyptian General Authority for Shore Protection, and funding from the Green Climate Fund.
