Dkahlia Governor Chairs the "Integrated Coastal Zone Management Committee" Meeting to Address Sea-Level Rise Risks

Dkahlia Governor Chairs the "Integrated Coastal Zone Management Committee" Meeting to Address Sea-Level Rise Risks

In a strategic step to enhance the security of Egypt's coastlines and confront climate challenges, Major General Tarek Marzouk, Governor of Dakahlia, chaired the periodic meeting of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Committee. The meeting featured high-level oversight of the latest updates on the "Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta Regions" project, which is being implemented in cooperation between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with funding from the Green Climate Fund.

The meeting was attended by prominent figures in climate action and planning, led by Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Project Manager for the North Coast and Delta; Dr. Yousry El-Komy, Strategic Planning and Governance Expert for Coastal Areas; and Mr. Mohamed Homs, Director of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Administration in the governorate.

Risk Maps: The Decision-Maker's Tool for Delta Protection

The meeting's agenda focused on formulating a future vision based on geospatial technology to protect the governorate's lands. Key discussions included:

Mapping Spatial Data onto Risk Maps: To precisely identify risk levels resulting from sea-level rise along the governorate’s coastline.

Supporting Decision-Making: Enabling executive leadership to develop robust and sustainable land-use plans for coastal areas based on accurate scientific indicators.

Celebrating the "First Place" in Climate Innovation

On the sidelines of the meeting, project management celebrated outstanding community efforts, honoring the initiative that won first place in the "Community Initiatives Competition," titled: "Our Environment is Our Responsibility... Adaptation is Our Path."

This prestigious position was secured by the members of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Administration in Dakahlia, in recognition of their excellence in institutionalizing a culture of integration between relevant authorities and the community to confront climate change on the Egyptian Delta coasts. The honorees included:

Mr. Mohamed Mohamed Kamal Abdo Homs – Director of the Administration.

Dr. May Samir Abdel-Majeed Mohamed Mashali – Director of Community Outreach, Awareness, and Capacity Building.

Dr. Hadeer Mohamed Farid Mohamed El-Shahat – Deputy Director of the Administration.

Mr. Abdel Aziz Mohamed Saad Nour El-Din – Technical Support Officer at the Administration.

It is worth noting that the management of the "Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation" project launched the "Best Initiative for Spreading the Culture of Integration" competition last January, aiming to unify the efforts of relevant stakeholders to address climate impacts on the Delta coasts. The competition witnessed strong participation, with project "Climate Ambassadors" submitting 18 collective and individual initiatives, offering pioneering solutions and ideas for sustainability.
