Egypt's Climate Adaptation Project Shines: UN and Government Officials Witness Success in Damietta

#eccadp #MWRI

Seriously, tomorrow will be even better...

Today is a beautiful day in the #eccadp project, a day where you see the project's success in the eyes of our country's officials and international officials.

It's a great feeling... to see our country's institutions working together and integrating with international institutions to achieve resounding and audible success on a global level in the field of coastal protection.

Today, H.E. Prof. Dr. Hani Sweilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Ms. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, accompanied by Dr. Ayman El-Shahaby, Governor of Damietta, and Mr. Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, visited the protection works implemented by the project in New Damietta Governorate in front of West Damietta Power Plant, as well as the project's pilot works for protection coordination, which presents a landscape model that enhances the appearance of the protections in a way that is suitable for the environmental and civilizational dimensions of upscale areas in the protection zone.

The happiness of Prof. Dr. Hani Sweilam was very clear as he spoke about the project, saying that it is one of the most important pioneering projects in the world in the field of coastal protection, and that many senior officials from many countries and international organizations are keen to visit the project as a leading model in the use of low-cost, environmentally friendly natural materials in coastal protection works. His Excellency stressed that the participation of the local community, especially women, was one of the most important community contributions to this project. He added that the protection methods used are simple methods learned from the people and developed to implement environmentally friendly protection works to protect against sea level rise.

It is worth mentioning that coastal protection works have been implemented with lengths of up to 69 kilometers in the northern delta in (5) governorates: Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Dakahlia, Damietta, and Port Said, in addition to developing an integrated plan for managing coastal areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Its main goal is to manage climate change risks in the long term and achieve sustainable development in the region. Also, mathematical models have been created for the risks of inundation, erosion, and sedimentation resulting from climate changes and marine factors, and a proposal has been prepared for the institutional framework for integrated coastal zone management on the Mediterranean Sea, and a design has been prepared for the coastal monitoring system on the Mediterranean coast.
